Little Italy comprises the majority of the Near West Side.  As the name implies it is an Italian neighborhood whose residents are primarily lower middle class or working class.

The area is steeped in tradition and customs.  Most of the people who live here are first or second generation immigrants.  They are strict Catholics who cling to the traditions of the Old World.  Some speak very little English.

Masses and Festivals are popular here and are celebrated regularly.  Most of them venerate the different Saints.  Another popular and indeed permanent fixture on the crowded city streets of this area are the mercatos or markets.   At these outdoor markets one can purchase all sorts of goods from different food staples to various trinkets.

The area is much like the North Side or South Side in the fact that it is crowded and dirty.  The housing is substandard save for a few of the more wealthy areas to the northeast of the district.

Because of the poverty and lack of opportunity many of the younger males have been attracted to the lifestyle of the flashy hoods who have made a name for themselves in La Cossa Nostra.  It is in this place that many of the Outfit's big shots got their start.  Given the alternatives open to immigrants, working for the mob is a godsend.
